Mont Tauch History

The first Caves Cooperatives were created by grouping together a multitude of small independent wine producers. This was an attempt to survive in an unstable market, which culminated in the wine sales crisis of 1907.

1913: The Cave Cooperative de Mont Tauch was established in the village of Tuchan and is one of the oldest cooperative cellars in the Languedoc.

1936: Along with eight other villages of the Corbières, Tuchan was awarded the appellation Cotes d’Agly for its Vins Doux Naturels (which later became Rivesaltes in 1943). This recognised the quality of its wine.

1948: Fitou became the first red wine to achieve AOC status in the Languedoc,
an exclusive product of the same nine villages including the four villages of Tuchan, Paziols, Villeneuve and Cascastel in the mountains; and the five villages of Fitou, La Palme, Caves, Treilles and Leucate in the maritime region by the sea.

1951: Corbières is first recognised as Corbières Supérieures (VDQS).

1985: Corbières is recognised as an AOC. Although the blend of Carignan,
Grenache and Syrah is essentially the same for Corbières and Fitou, Fitou are
selected vineyard sites within the larger Corbières Appellation.

1993: the Mont Tauch cooperative is merged with the neighbouring co-op
in Paziols, thus doubling the Cooperative’s production.

1999: On 1st July 1999 the Villeneuve and Durban cooperatives merged to form the new Mont Tauch.

2006: Mont Tauch and the recently merged cooperatives of Fitou and La Palme from the Maritime Fitou area, formed a partnership to give unity and coherence to the Fitou appellation.
